¿Mesías? La Invitación a la Tierra Santa–¿de qué se trata?

¿Quién traerá a los marginados y a los hijos de aquellos que alguna vez estuvieron perdidos en la diáspora? Todos hemos soñado con alguien, tal vez un ser divino o un superhéroe, que buscaría a los judíos perdidos y a las diez tribus y traería una parte de ellos de regreso a la tierra de Israel. Sabemos que no todos regresarán, porque solamente será un remanente el que será reunido. Y, sin embargo, ¿de qué se trata esta reunión? ¿Y cómo se llega a ser seleccionado?

¿Cómo se probará la valía de aquellos que deseen venir? ¿Se les dará todo, pasaje gratuito, beneficios a la llegada y un gran envío para ayudarlos a venir? ¿O será necesario un sacrificio de su parte? ¿Hasta qué punto habrá lucha? ¿Qué pasa con los viejos y los niños? ¿Cómo harán todos para que esto suceda? 

En los últimos 2000 años, muchas personas perdieron la vida en programas, holocaustos y masacres masivas. Muchos sufrieron congelación en los pies al caminar por montañas nevadas con zapatos rotos y poca ropa para escapar de las atrocidades. Algunos tuvieron la visión de regresar a la tierra. Algunos incluso vinieron.  La voz interior fue todo lo que tuvieron para impulsarlos a construir un hogar en Tierra Santa para sus descendientes. ¿Qué pasa ahora? ¿Será más fácil esperar y dejar que alguien más se encargue de los detalles? 

Los descendientes de quienes aceptaron el catolicismo, en lugar de enfrentarse a la guillotina o la pira del mártir, pueden tener que tomar algunas decisiones. ¿Van a reunir de alguna manera el valor suficiente para enfrentar la muerte si es necesario para ser incluidos entre los llamados a la tierra y seguir el pacto de Dios? ¿Vendrán a Israel a luchar con sus propias manos si es necesario para luchar contra los enemigos de Israel y ganarse la vida para sus familias? ¿Sus hijos o sus padres les impedirán venir? ¿Qué pasa con los hogares y las mascotas? ¿Cuánto vale para ti? 

Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los judíos en Europa fueron masacrados en masa, simplemente porque tenían sangre judía. ¿Por qué? ¿Y dónde estaba el Dios del Pacto en este momento? Es una gran pregunta, una que creó muchos ateos judíos. Muchos, incluso en la tierra de Israel, realmente no creen en un Dios como este. Nadie sabe realmente la respuesta a esa pregunta. Pero aunque esto es un misterio, ¡la preciosa tierra de Israel fue comprada con la sangre de estos mártires! Sus descendientes a menudo tomaron cualquier camino que pudieron por tierra y mar para regresar al desierto aullante de lo que entonces se llamaba Palestina. Era una tierra completamente desolada, llena de pantanos y desiertos y con poca productividad, ¡pero una tierra para gente libre, incluso con sus enormes desafíos! Y el coraje y el esfuerzo humano de los que vinieron y con su propio sudor y sangre, fue lo que drenaba los pantanos, plantaba viñas, restauraba los lugares desolados. Este coraje y esfuerzo es lo que ha convertido la tierra de Israel en un país habitable, productivo y libre, el único país democrático en Medio Oriente. ¿Podemos hacer menos?

¡No pensemos que la tierra de Israel nos va a ser entregada sin precio! He visto a mucha gente venir y, cuando les resulta difícil, dar media vuelta y volver corriendo a las comodidades de su país de origen. Y todo esto después de haber desperdiciado preciosos recursos que Israel felizmente les concedió.  ¡Israel no es para los temerosos! ¡Es para guerreros, agricultores que trabajarán hasta desmayarse, soldados que morirán por la tierra de Israel si es necesario!

¿Es esta voz, la que impulsa a la gente al sacrificio, en realidad la voz del Mesías? ¡Puede ser!

Si miramos las promesas de la Biblia, es fácil pensar que Alguien Más nos va a recoger. Pero ¿y si la voz que nos llama es una convicción del alma de que debe ser parte de la tierra? ¿Qué pasa si esa convicción es en realidad obra del Mesías, que unió a los verdaderos hijos de Jacob y los trajo a la tierra? 

¿Hay quienes trabajarán para traer a los ancianos, a los discapacitados y a los niños que no pueden hacerlo por sí mismos? ¿Dónde están los líderes entre nosotros? ¿Quién irá por nosotros? ¿Dónde está Moisés ahora? ¿No estarían estos líderes realmente haciendo la obra del Mesías? ¿Y de quién es la voz que nos está llamando?

“También los hijos de extranjeros que se unen a Yehovah para ministrarle y amar el nombre de Yehovah, para ser sus siervos, todos los que guardan el sábado para no profanarlo, y se aferran a mi pacto; incluso ellos Los traeré a mi monte santo, y los alegraré en mi casa de oración; sus holocaustos y sus sacrificios serán aceptados sobre mi altar; porque mi casa será llamada casa de oración para todos los pueblos. , que reúne a los desterrados de Israel, dice: Aún juntaré a él a otros, con los suyos que están reunidos.” (Isaías 56:6-8)

Dice este pasaje, que Yehovah traerá a los hijos del extranjero, pero ¿quiénes son las manos y quiénes están designados para hablar por Él? ¿Quién los sacará? ¿No son estas manos y voces humanas?

“Y oí la voz del Señor que decía: ¿A quién enviaré, y quién irá por nosotros? Y dije: Aquí estoy; envíame a mí”. (Isaías 6:8)

Messiah? What is the gathering about?

Who will go for Me?

Who will bring the outcasts and the children of those who were once lost in the diaspora? We all have dreamt of someone, perhaps a divine being or a superhero, that would seek out the lost Jews and ten tribes and bring a portion of them back to the land of Israel. We know that not all will return, for it is only a remnant that will be gathered. And yet, what is this gathering all about? And how does one become selected?

How will those who desire to come be tested for their worthiness? Will they be given everything, free passage, benefits on arrival, and a large shipment to help them come? Or will there be a sacrifice required on their part? How much of a struggle will be involved? What about the old folks and the children? How will everyone make this happen? 

Many over the past 2000 years lost their lives in pograms and Holocaust and mass slaughter. Many got frostbite on their feet walking across snowy mountains with torn shoes and little clothing to escape the atrocities. Some had the vision of returning to the land. Some even came.  The inner voice was all they had to drive them on to make a home in the Holy Land for their descendants. What about now? Will it be easier to wait and let someone else take care of the details? 

Descendants of those who accepted Catholicism, rather than face the guillotine or the martyr’s pyre, may have some decisions to make. Are they going to somehow summon up enough courage to face death if necessary to be included among those called to the land and to follow God’s covenant? Will they come to Israel to fight with their bare hands if necessary to fight off Israel’s enemies and carve out a living for their families? Will their children or parents keep them from coming? What about homes and pets? What is it worth to you? 

During WW2, Jews in Europe were mass slaughtered, simply because they had Jewish blood. Why? And where was the God of the Covenant at this time? It is a big question, one that created many Jewish atheists. Many, even in the land of Israel, do not really believe in a God like this. No one really knows the answer to that question. But even though this is a mystery, the precious land of Israel was bought with the blood of these martyrs! Their descendants often took whatever path they could over land and sea to  return to the howling wilderness of what was then called Palestine. It was a land completely desolate, filled with swamps and desert and little productivity, but a land for free people even with its humongous challenges! And the courage and human effort of those who came and by their own sweat and blood, drained the swamps, planted vineyards, restored the desolate places. This courage and effort is what has turned the land of Israel into a liveable, productive and free country, the only democratic country in the Middle East. Can we do any less?

Let us not think that the land of Israel is going to be handed to us without a price! I have seen too many people come and when they find it difficult, turn tail and run back to the comforts of their home country. And all this after having wasted precious resources that Israel happily bestowed upon them.  Israel is not for the fearful! It is for warriors, farmers that will work until they drop, soldiers that will die for the land of Israel if it is called for!

Is this voice, the one that drives people to sacrifice, actually the voice of the Messiah? It may be!

If we look at the promises in the Bible, it is easy to think that Someone Else is going to gather us. But what if the voice that calls us is a conviction of soul that we must be part of the land? What if that conviction is actually the work of the Messiah, bringing the true sons of Jacob together and to the land? 

Are there those who will work to bring the elderly, the disabled and the children who cannot do this for themselves? Where are the leaders among us? Who will go for us? Where is Moses now? Wouldn’t these leaders actually be doing the work of the Messiah?

“Also the sons of the alien, that join themselves to Hashem, to minister unto him and to love the name of Hashem, to be his servants, every one that keeps the sabbath from profaning it, and holds fast to my covenant; even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar: for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the peoples. The Lord Yehovah, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, saith: Yet will I gather others to him, with those of his that are gathered.” (Isa 56:6-8)

It says that YHVH will bring the sons of the alien, but who are the hands, and who are appointed to speak for Him? Who will lead them out? Are these not human hands and human voices?

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me.” (Isa 6:8)

What Applies Today?

Parsha Shoftim, Deuteronomy 16:18- 21:9

There are laws that cannot be followed by the majority of Jews and ten tribers when they do not live in Israel. Much of what is written in this Parsha is for when ancient Israel entered the land of Canaan. However, there are principles given which ideally should be followed in any country. What are these principles? People need to study and think deeply. Maybe make plans to return to the land?

What about cutting down fruit trees? (Deut. 20:19,20) This was forbidden during a siege against an enemy city. But what happens in the case of modern warfare when bombs are used rather than personal weapons? Should bombs be outlawed to protect Israel’s trees? A bomb can burn a lot of fields, as we see every time we drive even a few kilometers from our home. 

This is an especially significant problem now when the enemy has attacked Israel on seven different fronts. Many of the descendants of Esau and Ismael have organized to wipe Israel off the map. Daily bombardment, suicide bombs, knifings, car ramming, all of these threaten the lives of Israelis, let alone the land where we live and the desire to live a life of peace. In fact, the main greeting in every conversation is, “Shalom” which means not just “Hello”, but “Peace.” 

In last week’s Hebrew class, we discussed how to answer: “How are you?”, in the state of anxiety that we all find ourselves. We learned answers to this question. Answers such as: “not so good,” “I am sad when I hear the news,” “It is difficult for me.” And the one asking would then say: “Everything will be good by the will of God.” (Be-Ezrat Hashem, YiYay Tov). 

As we study the Parsha, it seems the laws for Israel at the moment cannot be applied, at least in the light of the current situation. Would things be different if Israel had followed the Torah during the past 2000 years?  And what if Israel truly followed Torah today, rather than all the superfluous laws that are now recognized by most Jews as Torah? So, since our modern situation has changed, are we somehow able to apply the principles indicated by Torah? The law about not destroying fruit trees was for the purpose of preserving the food supply. How can we guarantee the preservation of the food supply today? 

What about magistrates deciding on a case where 2 or 3 witnesses report a crime? Do we have this system set up today? Can it even work without a Beit Din or hall of judgement in every locality in Israel? 

What about destroying those who worship false gods in the land? According to this Parsha (Deut. 20:16-18). We have other religions that live in Israel. Some of these are peaceful and support the war effort. At this point, it is not feasible to destroy them all. It seems that the focus today is to decide who will help us and who is our enemy. 

So, yes, we are fighting for our very existence. And the question is: Why? Where is the God of Heaven? Does He hear our prayers? I believe He does and yes, there are miracles happening. There are hundreds of Jews worshiping every week on the Temple Mount now!  Full prostration while begging the Almighty God of Heaven to give us back this Holy Place that was so wickedly bartered away in 1994 to allow Jordan to control worship there.  (https://jcpa.org/article/jordan-and-the-temple-mount/). But the fact that Jews are worshiping there is, no doubt, a miracle and a step forward. Will it last? 

When will we be able to return to the true principles of the Torah? I believe things are moving in that direction. Most Israelis support the stand against giving away any more land. We have yet to see the conquest of the original borders of the land of Israel and their extension to the Biblically promised allotment to Israel which included all the land from the Euphrates to the Mediterranean Sea, from the Red Sea upwards into part of Lebanon. 

Let us all pray that YHWH will go out with Israel’s armies in an even more significant way. We do not have a high priest to go out ahead of the Army yet, but we have people everywhere praying for the success of Israel’s efforts to gain control of our own land.

Torah Alone?

Last week, someone claimed that I use strictly Torah and that I throw out the Neviim (prophets) and Kituvim (writings) in the Tanakh. The rumor spread, and I was shocked and stunned to realize that someone had mistaken my position. It all came about during the time of the fast of the 9th of Av, the day of fasting that Jews have complied with since before the days of some of the later prophets. 

I was told that since it was in the Tanakh that we are commanded to keep it. I have taken the stand, and I believe I am on firm ground, to say that no prophet had the right to add laws to the Torah. Otherwise, why did YHWH stress both to Moses and to Joshua that no one was to add nor take away from the laws given on Sinai?

I was assured that the entire Tanakh was the voice of Elohim. I am still astounded at the mess they made of people’s thinking! So, if I might, I am going to defend my position and hopefully people will hear me and clear up any misunderstandings. 

First, let me declare what I have not said. At no time have I said that it was wrong to fast on the 9th of Av or any of the other 3 days mentioned by the prophets. Actually, the prophet Zechariah rebukes the people for fasting on those days because their fast was not directed to YHWH. 

“Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?” (Zec 7:5) 

And in Zec 8 we read:
“Thus saith YHWH of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.” (Zec 8:19). 

Let me ask you what time was Zechariah speaking about here? What were the conditions? And was he accepting that a fast or feast declared by someone outside the Torah was a commandment? He absolutely was not! He was speaking to the people of his time.

Maybe this example seems that the prophet was, indeed, adding to the commandments. They were not! Let me explain. The idea of calling a fast for a community is always legitimate based on the needs of the people of Israel. Though, and I underscore, this is NOT an eternal command, and if people abstain from it, they are NOT sinning! When the people of Israel come back to the Land, it is not a time to mourn the loss of the land. It is time to celebrate. But we want to carry on with outdated fasts just because a prophet declared them! 

But you may say, “we want to fast for the third temple.” –there is nothing wrong with that. Go ahead, but don’t obligate others to do so. 

The other day, one of our community asked the rest of the members to fast for the people of Israel during this terrible war of attrition. There was nothing wrong with this. But many did not fast, and they are not condemned. And should we be condemned because we do not fast for a temple that was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar nearly 3000 years ago? 

And what about Purim? Was Mordechi given the right to create a new commandment? He was not! Can we not see that this is the same principle as I have mentioned above concerning the call to fasting?

But if one wants to fast for that, they are free to do so! We must not prohibit people from doing what they believe will bring them closer to the King of the Universe. Yet, this is an individual calling and we must recognize it as such.

I will always remain standing on the Torah as the only law for our spirituality. But, and I say again, the Torah, though it has some very concrete laws, does not restrict our freedom to fast or feast when we desire to do so. If it did, it would say, loud and clear, “thou shalt not fast for such and such.” There are some laws that we would be well to apply today. Things like not raising an object of worship, an idol, a monument, etc.

I have stopped kissing Mezuzot a long time ago. This, as I understand it,  is idolatry. When a person carves an object and renders it holy and then does obeisance to it, it is idolatry. I have mezuzot on my doors, yes, but I do not kiss them. And actually, many Karaites dispense with the Mezuzah completely. It is up to you how you fulfill the command to write the commandments on your doorposts. 

Let’s give each other freedom to interpret individually how the commandments are to be applied. I believe this to be the very foundation stone that we must cling to. Personal discernment and not community legislation. But don’t get me wrong. There ARE commandments that are carved in stone. 

If someone steals a box of candy from a store or God forbid, a motorcycle from a parking lot, there is no individual freedom to rationalize that it is acceptable. So also with the other 9 commandments. As I say, they were carved in stone.

Please talk to me about your concerns. I was very troubled about the rumor early in the week, which was purely vicious gossip about my standards and my approach to Torah. I believe that the Karaite way is to measure all things one does by the Torah and to use the prophets for what they were meant. That is to enlighten at least their generation on what the Torah meant for that time. They also help us understand how to apply the Torah today, but in no sense are they there to add or take away from the Torah.

“Ye shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall ye take from it, that ye may keep the commandments of Yehovah your God which I command you.” (Deu 4:2)

Las leyes para Israel en la Tierra y ¿Qué tan grande es la Tierra?

Moisés, cerca del final de su vida, pronuncia sus últimas palabras a Israel mientras se encontraba cerca de las fronteras de la Tierra Prometida. Les dice varias veces que las leyes que YHWH le dio en el Sinaí, las leyes aparte de los diez mandamientos, fueron dadas para cuando entraran en la Tierra.
Entonces, ¿por qué los judíos han continuado con las leyes del diezmo que fueron dadas para los Levitas y Cohenim (levitas y sacerdotes) y el Templo cuando no hay Templo? ¿Por qué los judíos en Europa y América construyen Sucot a lo largo de las calles de ciudades extranjeras cuando la Fiesta de los Tabernáculos debía celebrarse “en la Tierra” como un memorial de los 40 años que pasaron afuera en el desierto? ¿No están los judíos fuera de Israel, todavía en el desierto? ¿Y por qué se construyen y dedican sinagogas como lugares sagrados, cuando el único Lugar Santo verdadero fue apartado por YHWH en el Monte Sagrado en Israel? Y, en caso de que no lo sepamos, el Segundo Templo en Har HaBayit fue desolado por la traición del pueblo judío, ¡entregándole Jerusalén a Roma hace 2000 años! Har HaBayit está incluso ahora en las noticias, con el gobierno israelí poniéndose del lado de las naciones para evitar que los judíos recen allí. ¡Por favor, manténgase al tanto de lo que está sucediendo! ¡Siga orando!

La historia de los israelitas durante los últimos 3000 años no ha sido lo que Dios había planeado para nosotros, sino lo que nuestros antepasados ​​eligieron hacer. Israel ha estado entrando y saliendo de La Tierra; tomado cautivo varias veces y luego, durante un cautiverio prolongado, formularon nuevas leyes que les permitirían seguir siendo un pueblo separado y aún permanecer en las naciones a las que fueron dispersados. Pero, estas nuevas leyes fueron inventadas por sus rabinos y ahora se las conoce como la “Ley Oral”. Estas eran todo MENOS las leyes originales que les fueron dadas por mano de Moisés.
Las leyes dadas por mano de Moisés, que se afirma que son la base de la “Torá Oral”, debían ser observadas únicamente “en La Tierra”. Moisés dio sus palabras finales con varias referencias a esto. En ese momento estaban al final de la peregrinación de 40 años en el desierto. Seguramente habían estado practicando algunas de estas leyes, pero eran leyes que Moisés especificó claramente para cuando estuvieran en La Tierra. Veamos algunos de los versículos que dicen esto:

“Y Jehová os habló de en medio del fuego; oísteis la voz de las palabras, pero ninguna figura visteis; solamente oísteis una voz. Y él os anunció su pacto, el cual os mandó poner por obra, las diez palabras; y las escribió en dos tablas de piedra. A mí también me mandó Jehová en aquella ocasión que os enseñase los estatutos y decretos, para que los pusierais por obra en la tierra a la cual pasáis para tomar posesión de ella.” (Deu 4:12-14).

Y Moisés recuerda a los hijos de Israel que en el Sinaí ellos habían pedido que YHWH no les hablara, sino que Moisés fuera y recibiera de YHWH las leyes y luego se las enseñara.
Así que continúa recordándoles…

“Y ahora, ¿por qué moriremos? Porque este gran fuego nos consumirá. Si oímos más la voz de Jehová nuestro Dios, moriremos. Porque ¿quién hay de toda carne que haya oído la voz del Dios vivo hablando de en medio del fuego, como nosotros, y haya sobrevivido? Acércate tú, y oye todo lo que Jehová nuestro Dios diga, y dinos todo lo que Jehová nuestro Dios te diga, y nosotros lo oiremos, y lo haremos. Y oyó Jehová la voz de vuestras palabras cuando me hablasteis; y me dijo Jehová: Yo he oído la voz de las palabras de este pueblo que te ha hablado; han hablado bien en todo lo que han dicho. ¡Oh, si tuvieran tal corazón, que me temieran y guardaran siempre todos mis mandamientos, para que a ellos y a sus hijos les fuera bien para siempre! Ve, diles: Volveos a vuestras tiendas. Pero tú quédate aquí junto a mí, y yo te hablaré todas las cosas que te he dicho. mandamientos, estatutos y decretos que les enseñarás, para que los pongan por obra en la tierra que yo les doy para que la posean. Guardaos, pues, de hacer como Jehová vuestro Dios os ha mandado; no os desviéis a la diestra ni a la siniestra. Andad en todo el camino que Jehová vuestro Dios os ha mandado, para que viváis y os vaya bien, y tengáis largos días sobre la tierra que vais a poseer.” (Deu 5:25-33).

Nuevamente vemos que estas leyes eran para “en la tierra”.

“Estos, pues, son los mandamientos, estatutos y decretos que Jehová vuestro Dios mandó que os enseñase, para que los pongáis por obra en la tierra a la cual pasáis para tomar posesión de ella, para que temas a Jehová tu Dios, guardando todos sus estatutos y sus mandamientos que yo te mando, tú, tu hijo, y el hijo de tu hijo, todos los días de tu vida; y para que tus días sean prolongados. Y tú oirás, Israel, y cuidarás de ponerlos por obra, para que te vaya bien y seáis multiplicados, como Jehová el Dios de tus padres te ha dicho, en una tierra que fluye leche y miel.” (Deuteronomio 6:1-3).

Entonces Moisés enseña el Shemá, las leyes que hacen referencia a las Mezuzot (escribir las leyes en los postes de las puertas), y luego a la atadura del brazo y la cabeza-Tefilin- (que se refieren simbólicamente al control de nuestros pensamientos y acciones). Continúa desafiando a los israelitas a permanecer fieles y a no permitir que los idólatras vivan en La Tierra, para que no sean seducidos por la adoración de ídolos.

Estas instrucciones sobre el cumplimiento de ciertas leyes “en La Tierra” donde Israel iba a vivir de ahí en adelante eran para que prosperaran y tuvieran una larga vida en La Tierra y para que La Tierra fluyera leche y miel.

Por desgracia, nuestra historia muestra algo más y ahora esperamos un segundo Éxodo completo de nuestros exiliados que desean regresar y estar entre el pueblo de Israel.
¡Que nuestros hermanos y hermanas se esfuercen con todas sus fuerzas por estar entre ese grupo que viene a asentarse en La Tierra y a hacer retroceder las fronteras para que todos puedan habitar la Tierra que una vez fue prometida a nuestro padre Abraham!

¡Este es nuestro desafío! ¡Que regresemos y poseamos La Tierra en su plenitud!

“Jehová nuestro Dios nos habló en Horeb, diciendo: Bastante habéis estado en este monte. Volveos, partid e id al monte del amorreo, y a todos los lugares vecinos, en el Arabá, en el monte, en la Sefela, al Neguev y a la costa del mar, a la tierra del cananeo y al Líbano, hasta el gran río, el río Eufrates. Mirad que yo he puesto delante de vosotros la tierra; entrad y poseed la tierra que Jehová juró a vuestros padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, que les daría a ellos y a su descendencia después de ellos.” (Deuteronomio 1:6-8)
